 and Conflict Resolution

Make Your Workday Happier

Even if you don’t like your job, you can brighten up your day to enjoy your job more, and you may even find you like it, do a better job, and get promoted. These can also be a technique for conflict resolution.

Here are some ideas for what to do, drawn from workshops and interviews with managers and employees.

  • Do a relaxation exercise or meditate, so you focus on what you most like about your job. Make your visualization as vivid as possible, as you see yours participate in your favorite activities or interacting with your favorite people. You’ll feel more positive and upbeat.
  • Fix up your office or desk with fun objects that express you. They will brighten your day, and are great conversation starters, as well. For example, one popular bank manager showed off her love of purple by wearing purple and put purple objects on her desk, from little cars to purple puppies. And by creating a cheerful environment around her, she not only cheered herself up, but customers loved her.
  • Collect amusing cartoons, jokes, and articles, and share them with others by passing them around or posting them somewhere, such as on a bulletin board or in the lunchroom. If acceptable in your office, you might send them by e-mail before or after work on or on breaks. These help to create a more playful, comfortable atmosphere for not only you, but for everyone, and they can be conversation starters for lunch and breaks during the day.
